A Day in the Life of a Graduate in Treasury

First thing in the morning I check my emails and the
financial news for anything that has come in from the
night before. Every morning at 8am, the whole Treasury
floor comes together for a briefing on key market
events over the last 24hrs and possible market moves
for the day ahead. The discussion is left open to the
floor for anyone to add their opinion, whether they are
a senior dealer or a Graduate.
One of the important tasks for the Treasury
department is to produce a daily market commentary.
This is posted on the Anglo website and emailed
to many of our clients in order to ensure they are
constantly up-to-date with the key financial news.
In Treasury the business focus is around teams or
desks. This week it is my desks responsibility to
produce the commentary and the Head of the desk
has asked me to contribute towards writing it. I cant
think of many other organisations that would get
a Graduate involved in this after only a few weeks
experience.
The rest of my morning involves contacting clients who
have deposits maturing and ensuring all the previous
deals have been processed and correctly reported.
After a busy morning its time for a quick lunch with my
Graduate mentor to review my progress.

The afternoon is more fluid and can vary from day
to day. The desk I work on offers risk management
solutions in the form of Interest Rate and Foreign
Exchange hedging proposals, as well as deposit products.
If the markets are volatile then my afternoon is often
spent supporting the dealers - ensuring any deals are
correctly booked and taking calls if they are on another
line to a trader.
Having finished my tasks at the office its a quick dash
to the tube in order to take part in the annual interdepartment
cricket match. After taking some wickets,
enjoying a few drinks and a BBQ, I travel home aching
all over and ready for another day.
